My Love of Painting Oranges

"Orchard Nostalgia"

By now, you must know how much I either love the color orange, enjoy eating oranges, and or love painting this delicious sweet juicy fruit. I was recently invited to create paintings reflecting scenes of Southern California's San Gabriel Valley for an upcoming juried exhibit. There is a long history of growing oranges in Southern California. All around the southland, many hundreds of ranches once graced the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys, San Bernadino, Riverside and Orange Counties. Sadly, there are few orange groves remaining. I decided to create a still life to honor the rich history of growing citrus in the San Gabriel Valley. "Orchard Nostalgia," (with crate labels of orange growers that once existed) is a 16"x20" oil on canvas. This is one of the largest still life oil paintings I have done. It was a big challenge for me. I am pleased with the painting and really glad it is finished. This one lingered on my easel a long time.

I have talked about going outside my comfort zone as an artist before. This time it's with a cooler palette along with painting roses...always a challenge. From time to time, I feel the need to try different colors (if only for one painting), brushes, surfaces, or subject matter. It's a good thing. Eventhough I continue to learn and develop with every painting I do, a new set of challenges pushes you more. I always gain something important, often an "aha" moment. Now mind you, that aha moment could be a good or bad one! For this painting I used mostly, Viridian, Burnt Umber, Alizarin, Rose Quinacridone, Cad Yellow Pale, Indian Yellow and Titanium White. I used a very small amount of Ultra Marine and Cobalt. For the most part, my challenge here was using Viridian and Burnt Umber for the shadows and dark background. (Perhaps I was influenced by the recent small painting I did (see below) of "Paris Rouge" - a cool palette of colors.) Though my shadows and dark background is usually dictated by the objects and the light source in my still lifes, it is often a combination of Raw Sienna, Ultra Marine and Alizarin. As for painting roses, it's been a slow process. I took advantage of the many blooms I had this summer, studying, sketching and painting roses. More challenges await.

Sometimes at the end of the day I have large piles of (mixed) paint on my palette. But, since I mix medium into my paint, I usually do not use it the next day. I have been working on two large paintings for weeks. One of them has a limited color palette (Raw Sienna, Ultra Marine Blue, Alizarin,White, and a touch of Indian Yellow), leaving me with wonderful greys at the end of the day.

Looking at the greys a few days ago, I thought of the photographs I took of coffee cups in Paris. There are many interesting warm and cool colors, all in varying shades of lights and darks found in white cups and saucers. For this small painting I wanted to keep my brush stokes fresh and loose. I think it ended up being a good way to use up the paint. (One of many double espressos I had.....this one with a spot of milk. I loved that it came with sugar cubes. So classic.)

This is a painting I mentioned in a previous blog. I had brushed the painting with retouch varnish not realizing that the rose was not yet dry. I ended up having a bleeding white rose and a white film across the painting. A sad sight! I had to put it aside a few weeks. It's now finished it, with the exception of a coat of varnish! That will have to wait.....a while.

The Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, CA, is a premier fine art show held during July and August each year. There are many wonderful and varied artisans who are juried into this world-renowned art exhibition. Though I attended the opening night reception last month, it was far too crowded to view the art up close and personal. With only one week left, I went to see the show again and to visit a couple of my artist friends who are exhibiting this year.

Here are two new paintings I finished over the past week. I had a third one to post, but really messed it up when I tried to varnish it this morning! It's a small painting of mandarins with a Double Delight rose. The white paint on the rose had not dried completely.....well, you get the picture. I have not done that in awhile! Fortunately, I was able to clean up some of the white mess by gently lifting it off with mineral spirits. Much of the rose had been painted over a week ago - thank goodness it was dry. I'll put the painting aside for a few weeks before I repaint the lightest areas of the rose. Being impatient never pays off....especially when you are an artist.

The tea cup in "Kutani and Mandarins" is part of a collection I inherited from my Grandmother. Though it's a familiar cup from my childhood, I knew nothing about the maker and origins until I decided to paint it. I did a little research. (Isn't the Internet great for things like this?) Kutani porcelain dates back to about 1655. When high-quality china clay was discovered in the Kutani Village (now in Ishikawa Prefecture Japan) a kiln was established to make porcelain with bold colorful designs. Characterized by motifs of birds, flowers, landscape and geometrical patterns, the kiln suddenly closed about a half a century later. In the early 19th century, the local ruling clan, which was enjoying power and influence, revived china making in Kutani. The pottery is celebrated today with many working kilns in the area. (The teacup and saucer I have is from the Kosen Kiln.) It appears to be a very popular place for tourists and they even have a Kutani Pottery Festival each year. How'bout that!

(Sorry this is posting for a 2nd time, I updated this to put sold on the painting.) I painted this on a gessoed wood panel adding medium to my paint. I think the glossy look works really well, showing off the table and porcelain cup. Though I was not too keen about the new medium I chose to work with. I recently bought Gamblin Galkyd Gel, it drys way too fast for me, among other things. I'll stick to M. Graham Walnut Alkyd Medium or the wonderfully toxic (!) Old Masters Maroger.

I've begun to select pictures from my Paris trip to paint. Here are two paintings - little vignettes - just off my easel. I stayed at a hotel not far from Rue Cler and walked by this flower shop many times.

The light was beautiful around 8:00pm in the Tuileries Garden (Jardin des Tuileries, created by Catherine de Medicis, 1564). I had planned to sit and paint with the watercolors I brought, but by the time I finished taking a ton of photographs the park was closing. With so much light still left, it was too bad we all were gently ushered out. More Paris paintings to come.

It's high time to blog and paint again. Unfortunately, I got sick soon after I returned from my exciting trip to Paris. June turned out to be a slow month recovering. Feeling chipper again, I'm back to doing what I love most....painting.

During my annual summer trip to the Sawtooth Valley (in Idaho) last week, I painted a few still lives. Gathering up items at my sister's ranch, we created some fun setups inside the barn. With all the beautiful landscape outside, we had never thought of setting up inside to paint. The natural light streaming in was perfect, also the magnificent view out the window.

Trip to Paris

Soon after I participated in the annual Balboa Island Art Walk last month, I left for a wonderful trip to Paris. It was a perfect vacation filled with visits to museums, parks, churches, cafes, and more! It would take pages of blogging to share my experience as an artist in Paris. So, for now, I decided to just post some pictures (selected from over 1,000 I took!) of my days in this amazing city.

Musee d'Orsay. Since the museum is undergoing renovations, much of their famed collection has been touring the United States. (I missed my opportunity to see the exhibit when it was in San Francisco.) Though I was disappointed in the limited number of paintings on view, I did see the special Manet exhibit which was wonderful. No photos are allowed inside. (Purchase a museum pass to by-pass the long lines.)

I could not resist posting this picture. Can you spot the Mona Lisa?

After 6 hours at the Louvre (which included lunch at one of the restaurants in the museum) I finally reached the highlight of my museum visit, paintings by Jean -Simeon Chardin. The collection was worth the wait. I got to view over 25 fabulous paintings by one of my favorite artists. Also hanging in the same wing ( French 18th-19th century artists), was a large collection of Camille Corot paintings. One room after another was filled with his inspiring paintings, it was an unexpected delight!

Pear Medley Oil Painting

For this painting I wanted to create a still life that looked classic and traditional, but also projected an informal country feel. Using a palette of primarily warm colors, I created subtle color relationships with the pears. For continued color harmony, I added my green mixture of paint (from the pears) to my red mixture, building up thin layers of paint for the red can. I used both sable and synthetic brushes to try and achieve soft loose strokes with some fine details.

Salon International 2011 Exhibit

I attended the opening of the Salon International Exhibit at the Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art (in San Antonio) over the weekend. I thought I would share a some pictures. The owners of the gallery accepted 415 fine art oil paintings for this show. They received about 1200 entries from 47 States and 13 Countries to be juried. I am very honored to have 2 paintings selected.

There are many personal favorites in this fabulous show! This picture shows two paintings I love, Rusty Jones painted a magnificent glowing Grand Canyon, and the river painting by Mitch Baird I thought was exceptional and inspiring.

I thought this painting was so original and beautifully done, "Swing Dance" by Clement Kwan, won the Figurative/Narrative award. "Mason Jar with Daisies" oil on linen, 12"x9"

Fresh paint! Having a variety of mason jars to chose from, I decided to finally paint one. With the exception of using phthalo green blue (not sure if I have ever used it before), I kept my palette simple. Although the focus is the Ball Jar, choosing yellow daisies and painting blue-purple shadows makes for a strong use of complementary colors. I love the bright sunlight streaming in, adding drama on the white cloth.

A few weeks ago I joined some friends in the late afternoon to paint in Laguna Beach. I don't often paint outside during the winter months, so I was caught off guard when the sun disappeared WAY before I had a chance to lay in my colors! I was unprepared for that. I think I'll stick to painting outside when the days are longer. Of course it really didn't matter that I failed to paint much, it was just beautiful being outside in the brisk air taking in the view.

Religious Window Displays in Rome

The first time I passed by a window display of clerical garments it was dusk, near Piazza della Minerva in Rome. The light was glowing on the decorative vestments, stoles, chalices and other ornamental pieces. They were beautiful displays of ecclesiastical wear. As an artist, and also a lady who has spent many a year in Catholic schools, I thought there could be something unique about painting these displays. I took pictures and painted "The Pope's Tailor" (below) when I returned. I always meant to paint more from the photographs, but never did. So now, several years later, I have painted "Advent Purple," the first in a new series I've begun. (The garment I've painted is a surplice, worn by clergy in a choir, during processions and when administering the sacraments. The purple stole is worn during Advent and the Season of Lent, also during confessional.)

Here is a new painting I just finished. I have wanted to paint this one for some time. I happened to have my camera with me when I wandered into an antique store last year. I saw this lovely china set stacked in a cabinet. It was a still life waiting to be painted! I loved the warm gray greens, also the color of the blue in the china. I spent a lot of time deciding on and working through a specific and limited palette for this painting. (No reaching for the Alizarin, Ultramarine, Raw Sienna shadow combo....this time.) As I painted, I reminded myself to keep the brush strokes soft and painterly. I had a clear vision of what I wanted the painting to look like, to feel like.....I just needed to have patience with this one. Trying a limited palette of colors to achieve the color harmony, values and tones I was after was a great lesson and a welcomed challenge. I hope you like it. (This painting has was selected for the Salon International Exhibit 2011 held in April this year.)

Painting Persimmons

It appears I love the color orange. Didn't know, but it sure got me thinking after painting pumpkins, squash, and oranges. So, why not try persimmons. Here is my first attempt at painting some winter persimmons. I thought it was quite challenging. The difficulty here is to not make them look like tomatoes!

The idea of this painting was to fill up the small squared space. Though there are nine items, including the surfaces and background Asian pattern, it retains a quiet soft feel. I made the pears colorful, pulling them away from the other objects, but still wanting your eye to travel around the painting.

I recently spent some time photographing new still life setups. (As if the 1,000+ pictures I have already taken are not enough to choose from.) Using an old bench I picked up in an antique store, I thought it would add interest to my new still lifes. Here are a couple of pictures from my photo shoot, yet to be painted! The one I chose to paint is shown below, along with the progression of painting it.

I painted "Vintage Bauer with Garlic" (oil on linen, 12"x16") over the course of 6 days. (I captioned my quick snaps as I progressed.)

Last year I participated in a holiday boutique show and was asked if I had any small Christmas themed paintings. I did not....sure wish I had! I also received requests through my website for holiday paintings. One person said they liked displaying small paintings on an easel on her entry table (depending on the holiday throughout the year). A wonderful idea. I have just completed the two paintings above.

Fresh off my easel today. I'm slowly getting back into a groove after all the summer events and shows. Shortly after I participated in the Bowers Museum Invitational Show in early September, I started a large commission painting. With that painting now completed, I am settling back into my studio. I am painting new small works for an upcoming holiday miniatures show, and working on larger paintings to submit for national juried shows.

Something a little different to post. I participated in one of Randy Higbee's Open Studio Events during the summer. His company, Art & Frame in Costa Mesa, is where many local artists buy their frames. He has a terrific warehouse space which also serves as a fine art gallery and designer showroom. He held fun and creative open studio events where artists came to paint from a costumed model, or still life.

After surveying the different setups around the showroom, I spotted a fabulous Tang Horse. Though it was already positioned on a table as part the costumed model setup, I was allowed to add to it for a still life composition. (I am not a figure painter, I find it quite daunting.) Once I gathered objects (there are many wonderful and interesting items in his gallery) and positioned everything just right, I realized that the Tang Horse was not going to work! Funny how those things happen, oh well. Painting along side the other artists, seeing their different styles and techniques, was a fun and inspiring experience. Landscape sketches from Idaho

Here are two Plein Air landscapes I painted during my Idaho vacation (see previous post). They are painted with a limited palette, something I'm trying to get used to. I realized earlier this year, as I began painting outside more and more, that it's best if I have a limited palette. I think it saves time and frustration (!) if you pull from only a handful of colors. So, for the time being I am using Cad Lemon Yellow, Cad Red, Alizarin Crimson, Transparent Oxide Red, Cerulean, French Ultramarine and Titanium White (all Winsor Newton, except for Transparent Oxide Red which is Rembrandt.) I miss using Viridian, Cad Yellow Pale, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber and Black (when mixed with Lemon Yellow makes a great green). We'll see how it goes! It's always a learning lesson.

I painted these lemons outside in the summer sun while on my vacation in the Sawtooth Valley, Idaho. I had fun with these lemons, using thicker paint on my brush, making quicker but more deliberate strokes.

Socalpapa Art Gallery presents a new show. The exhibit features paintings done of locations that were favored by the Early California Impressionists. In partnership with Newport Harbor Nautical Museum, 600 East Bay Ave, at the Fun Zone, Balboa Peninsula.

My painting, "Sycamore Meadow" has been juried into the show by Jean Stern, Irvine Museum Director, the judge for "California Impressionism, Then & Now" exhibit. (Please see previous post regarding this painting which I did Plein Air at Casper's Wilderness Park.)

Idaho Vacation

There have been more local art shows and events this year than in the past. It seems it's been non-stop for the past 3 months....all good...I say! There have been juried gallery shows at the Socalpapa Gallery, the Balboa Island Art Walk, Art in the Park with Newport Beach, the Center Club Event, and two shows at the Lawler Art Gallery. I would like to thank those of you who have stopped by one (even more) of the shows I have participated in. After the very successful Back Bay Show in Newport Beach a few weeks ago (with socalpapa), I took off on a vacation!

I had a great trip to the Sawtooth Valley in Idaho. I brought my painting gear and went out painting plein air a few times, in between some relaxation and hiking. (I will post the paintings soon, need to photograph them.) In the mean time, here are some pictures from my trip. The weather was glorious, and the landscape was lush and green with lots of wildflowers. That's not usually the case this time of year. But, they have had a lot of rain the summer, which also made for mosquitoes. Not the best when painting by the rivers and lakes!

I have painted on this road during previous trips. With the pastures being so green this year, and the beautiful aspen trees, it's a perfect spot to setup. I love the peaceful feeling painting here and listening to the wind rustle through the aspen leaves.

Painting at Caspers Wilderness Park

A new favorite place to paint! A few weeks ago I joined fellow artists from SOCALPAPA to paint at Caspers Wilderness Park. Located off Ortega Hwy, in San Juan Capistrano, the park is 8,000 acres. It's filled with huge California Oaks and Sycamore trees, a beautiful place. The area reminds me of paintings done by early California Impressionists. I had such a good time, and found many varied scenes to paint, I went back this past Friday to paint again.

My painting of a sycamore (along with an oak tree growing behind it, or in it?) was begun about 3:00pm. I found that the shadows and color did not change too much over the few hours I stood painting it. Not sure if it was due to my location in the park, or the high summer sun. I felt as if I did not have to rush through the painting, which was most enjoyable. I can't wait to paint here come autumn, or spring. There is a large creek which passes through Caspers Park...many great painting opportunties.

I chose to paint the eggplant on a smooth gessoed wood panel. (I buy veneer board at the lumber yard, a 5-layer panel, then prime it with two layers of acrylic gesso, then sand). I wanted the smoothness of the board to show off the glossy feel of the eggplant. It think it worked well, and you can also see the transparency of the varied warm tones near the highlight.

I'm still painting scenes of the Back Bay in Newport Beach for the upcoming show. I went out early evening to capture the setting sun. Painting directly into the sun had its challenges. I painted this between 6:45-8:00pm....I think the sun finally went behind the dover hills about 8:15pm. A lucky night, not many bugs and no mosquitoes. (This painting was selected for Opening Night Reception July 23rd, a juried show, for the Back Bay Show.)

I painted this small painting last week for the Lawler Art Gallery, "Vines and Wine" exhibit. I think the grapes in this painting turned out to have a nice luminescence quality. I painted it on a wood panel. I did a few other grape paintings (green and red), each of them took on a different quality when painted on different surfaces; linen, canvas or wood panel.

I have some wonderful antique pewter pieces that belonged to my mother. I've been intrigued by this small item since childhood. After a bit of research, I'm still not sure what it was used for. There are some similarities to a porringer, but I think it's too small to eat out of! Maybe it's a candle holder? Doesn't matter, I love this little gem and enjoyed painting it.

Studio Pear

I painted this pear at my sisters art studio. You might notice it has quite a yellow cast on it. It's amazing what the eye sees! I did not realize how different the light was in her studio until I looked at the painting at my house. I used a lot of yellow and blue tones in the white table cloth, though I was certain I was painting it with a lot more white!

On Sunday morning, with only a few hours left before we had to catch our plane home, we decided to paint one more. A very quick study of an old small church located on Mare Island. I painted it loose and fast, which for me makes it look unfinished. I'd like to fuss with it more, tighten it up now that I am at home. But I've decided to just let it be. (Hope I can stick with that. Artists love to go back over their paintings, only to mess them up!)

Painting in Sonoma and Napa Valley

I've just returned from a wonderful painting trip to the wine country in Northern CA. Staying with our artist friend, Brent Jensen, he took us to a variety of picture-perfect places to paint! "Vineyard Barn" was painted along a small country road in Sonoma. We also painted at beautiful vineyards in Napa Valley. What a fun time, not to mention perfect weather and fabulous wine!

Though Brent is painting a vineyard scene in front of him, we were all struck by the beautiful wisteria behind him. We wanted to paint that too, but truthfully, my back was killing me, I could not stand any longer after our first all-day adventure. I needed wine! Hopefully I can capture the color and light working from a picture I took.

The Regusci Winery (established in 1878), is a beauitful vineyard in Napa Valley.

"Easy Rider Dinghy" 5"x7"

There are many wonderful boats to paint all around Newport Harbor. But probably the best place is Balboa Island. A sentimental favorite for local artists is the "Easy Rider," a red dinghy located along the Island's boardwalk. I am not alone when I say, I have painted that boat and other dinghies quite a few times. They add to the scenic charm of Balboa Island.

The Lawler Art Gallery

I wanted to post a few pictures of the new Lawler Art Gallery, now open in Newport Beach. I have been busy these past few weeks helping my sister, Linda Lawler, turn her two room art studio into a gallery. One room is still used as her studio, but also displays her paintings from trips to Zambia and Fiji. The front room has been transformed into a small intimate gallery. The gallery exhibits a variety of paintings by local artists, including myself.

White Daisies selected for Salon International Exhibit

I am excited to annouce that "White Daisies" has been juried into the Salon International 2010 Exhibit at the Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art in San Antonio. I am very honored to be a part of this wonderful exhibit for the third consecutive year. Greenhouse Gallery said they had close to 1,300 entries this year, and choose 392 paintings for the show. You can understand if I am a bit nervous, and feel the stress when I select a painting(s) to enter into a juried show!

I had been thinking about a set-up of white Daisies with red fabric for months. By the time I bought the daisies and brought everything together for the still life, I had a very strong idea of what the composition would be and what the feel of the painting should be. It was my hope to combine the boldness and drama of red and white, with the softness of the fabric and flowers. I know I say it often, but it was important for me to keep it fresh and painterly. I am very pleased with how the painting turned out. Enough to enter it into the Salon International 2010! April 10-April 30th.

Items I gathered to create new still life setups

Here is a setup that I think has many wonderful elements. It should work well, composition and color....can't wait to paint this one!

I paint from my own still life compositions. I often gather many wonderful objects I've collected over the years. I'll buy fruit, and or flowers, then spend a few days photographing the still life setups. For convenience, and flexability, I take pictures of my larger setups. Since I have space restraints in my studio, it works well for me. Sometimes I will have a strong idea of what items I want to bring together, or have a theme I want to work with. Creating a good compostion is the hard part. It's one of the biggest challenges I continue to work through as an artist. A few months ago I gathered items for new compositions. I thought I would share some pictures with you. You can see a little bit of my process.

I painted "Small Bowl and Daisy" from the photograph, on the left. I reworked the compostion a bit to use a 6"x6" wood panel. I kept it loose in style showing brush work.

Keeping it Painterly

Part of my interest in creating this blog, is to make time to paint small works on a weekly basis. I really enjoy painting them; 5x7, 6x6, 6x8. It's a great way to keep things loose and simple, reminding me to stay fresh and painterly. In my still life work, I have a tendency to get caught up in detail, which can give my paintings a tighter more realistic feel. In "Four Mandarins" a 5x7 on canvas board, I kept it loose with a painterly feel. Framed $250. SOLD

Silver Creamer Study

If I have a comfort zone, it's probably Pears and Oranges. But there are many objects I want to paint, need to study them....Silver is one of them. I took the time to study a small sliver creamer the other day. I would like to incorporate silver pieces in my larger still life paintings. Here is my 6"x6" study painted on a wood panel board.

Painting in the Sawtooth Valley, Idaho

My first post is from my holiday trip to Idaho. I have long wanted to paint a snow scene plein air. I made sure I brought my painting gear with me and was up for the challenge. The weather was clear and sunny, but definitely on the cold side. The only problem was trying to keep my feet from freezing. The afternoon glow on the colorful willows, which dot the snowy landscape, are a beautiful sight. It's my first try painting in the snow, along with capturing the blue and purple shadows. The colors are more intense than how I painted them, purhaps I was holding back not wanting the blues and purples to look garish! I had a great time and look forward to painting more winter scenes.
